Will my extraction hurt?

Return to FAQs

Extractions can be scary. At AZ Cosmetic & Family Dentistry, we take extra steps to make sure that you are completely comfortable throughout your procedure, and we’ll provide you with the advice you need to stay comfortable at home and promote healing.

While preparing you for your extraction, Dr. Narra will carefully analyze the condition of the tooth and its placement to determine how simple or complex the procedure will be. In some situations, it may be appropriate for you to see a specialist for your extraction, and if this is the case for you, Dr. Narra will explain why and also recommend a trusted oral surgeon for the procedure.

Before the extraction begins, you will be numbed so that you don’t feel a thing. We can also provide nitrous oxide to reduce anxiety and further dampen sensation. Using special instruments, Dr. Narra will gently loosen the tooth and then lift it out. The procedure is usually over quickly.

Once you leave, plan to avoid eating or drinking for at least two hours, use the gauze we provide to keep bleeding to a minimum and promote the development of a clot, and avoid drinking through a straw or smoking to prevent disruption of your clot (which is necessary for proper healing).

Of course, if you have any questions about your home care or your healing, don’t hesitate to call our office.
