Why is oral cancer screening important?

Return to FAQs

Oral cancer rates are on the rise, particularly among young men and women. What makes this disease particularly insidious is the fact that it often goes undetected for too long and has a survival rate that is lower than that of more famous cancers, including cervical cancer, thyroid cancer, and skin cancer.

The key to successfully catching and treating oral cancer is with regular screening as part of your preventive examination. At AZ Cosmetic and Family Dentistry, we use the Velscope, which can help us detect cancers and precancerous cells that would not be visible with the naked eye, improving our chance of catching oral cancer when it is most treatable.

Oral cancer can strike anyone at anytime. While there are some risk factors that increase your chances of developing the disease, including tobacco use, alcoholic beverages, and presence of the human papilloma virus, these are not necessary, and you could develop the disease anyway. Catching the disease early is your best chance for successfully treating the disease. If you develop a lesion or sore in your mouth that doesn't heal promptly or you notice any discolorations on the soft tissues of your mouth, like your gums, cheeks, tongue, or palate, let us know right away.

Call our Glendale dental office today to schedule your examination and preventive screening.
