Why are sealants needed?

Return to FAQs

Not everybody needs sealants, but they can be a helpful preventive measure for children and some adults.

Back teeth tend to have deep grooves that catch and trap particles of food and bacteria. In many cases, children don’t have the dexterity (or the patience!) to effectively clean this area. Even with dexterity and patience, however, this area can be challenging to keep clean and is the most likely area for cavities to develop.

We recommend sealants for most children who have developed their permanent molars. We may also recommend sealants for children who are particularly prone to cavities. Adults who have especially deep grooves or who are prone to cavities can also benefit from sealants.

Sealants are simple to place, are completely noninvasive, and have no side effects whatsoever. They may feel a bit odd when they are first placed, but you or your child will adapt to them quickly. Sealants can last for several years, but we will check their condition at each cleaning and examination. If the sealants appear to be wearing down, we’ll replace them.

At AZ Cosmetic and Family Dentistry, we prefer to prevent problems before they start whenever possible, and sealants are a valuable tool in the fight to stop cavities.
