What are the advantages of tooth colored fillings?
Fillings are one of the most common services we perform here at AZ Cosmetic and Family Dentistry. Although we’d like to prevent every cavity, it just isn’t possible, unfortunately!
But just because we fill a cavity doesn’t mean that your teeth have to be permanently marred. Silver (amalgam) fillings leave dark marks on the surfaces of your teeth that are easily visible when you smile. If your cavity goes deep, the metal filling can discolor your entire tooth.
Dr. Narra is skilled in the placement of tooth-colored fillings, made of composite resin. Our patients prefer these fillings for a number of reasons:
- They blend in flawlessly with the natural shade of teeth and are practically invisible once they are placed.
- They allow us to remove less healthy tooth material than metal fillings.
- They bond to the tooth, which reduces the risk of leaking and loose fillings.
- They don’t contain mercury like amalgam fillings.
We would like to point out that even though amalgam fillings contain mercury, having them does not put you at any kind of risk and we do not recommend replacing fillings unless they are damaged in some way or are in a conspicuous place. Multiple studies conducted by the CDC and the US Public Health Department have shown repeatedly that there is no health risk associated with metal dental fillings. These fillings do have special storage, handling, and disposal requirements, however, so composite fillings are a much more convenient and environmentally friendly option!
Dr. Narra understands that aesthetics are important when it comes to dental treatments, and tooth-colored fillings are a great option for keeping your smile beautiful.
